I went to Nanjing to visit the 2nd Nanjing International Art Festival. The Fair was held in the Nanjing International Exhibition Centre located next to the beautiful Xuanwu Lake.
The fair was huge, covering two entire floors of the very large Exhibition halls.
The exhibition was separated into several sections. The first section, which was the only selling part of the exhibition, was held on the ground floor and was focused more on traditional Chinese painting as well as fairly conventional international art. Lots of landscape paintings like these (not really my cup of tea):
It got much more interesting on the second floor. The entire second floor of the exhibition hall was taken up by the art fair. The theme of this part of the fair was called “A Beautiful New World”.
I saw a couple of artists I had been following for a while. I liked these three large scale works by the Luo Brothers.
They had one piece by Yu Feifei, an artist I first saw in Taipei earlier this year. She also sometimes goes by the acronym ‘Flora’.
Yu FeiFei and these following works are great examples of a theme I am particularly drawn to, which is the combination of almost photo realistic elements (demonstrating great technical mastery) combined with surreal and abstract elements. The visual effect created by these paintings would be difficult to achieve in any other medium such as sculpture or photography.
Zhong Biao – “Blown Over” (2014)
Shi Qun – “Dresser” (2015)
Huang Simao – “Enjoyment 2” (2015)
Wang Xiaoshuang – “The City Words 6” (2014)
Some other interesting pieces:
Zhou Dong – “Love is a Lighting Match” (2014)
Cheng Yi – “The Phase of No Phase” (2014)
Zhang Lin – “Accumulation Brilliant 2” (2015)
Li Changlong – “I Don’t Believe a Rabbit’s Storytelling” (2015)
The second floor of the exhibition also had a number of intriguing conceptual works, several video rooms and some large scale installations.
Overall I though this was a very well organised and curated show. The art show alone would make it worthwhile to come to Nanjing, but Nanjing also happens to be one of the most important historical cities in China. It is one of the Four Ancient Capitals of China, and a beautiful city to visit. Check out my travel blog site here for more information about Nanjing.
