Yu Nancheng was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1956 and currently lives and works in Shanghai. He is more widely known as Mr. Fish, because of the resemblance of his name to the word for fish (鱼 yú) in Mandarin.
Nancheng Yu has been a professional artist for almost 40 years, but in the last few years he broke new ground by developing his own original painting technique. Using a palette knife he adds the oil paint in thick layers to achieve a three-dimensional relief like effect. He often uses traditional “Chinese Red” for the main element of the artistic subjects.
In his most popular “Tai Chi” series, a near infinite number of people practising Tai Chi lined up in perfect rows and moving in perfect harmony, usually in front of a distant and faint Chinese palace or temple, create a powerful yet calming visual impact. Other series by the artist include the “New Shanghai”, “Dancers” and “Flowers” series.
Yu Nancheng has had several solo exhibition in China, as well Europe and the US. His artworks are collected widely across the world.
